What is a Dental Cleaning?

Dental cleanings are usually performed by a dental hygienist. It consists of the removal of plaque and tartar to promote a healthier smile. In addition, your dental hygienist also speaks with you regarding proper dental care and techniques. We encourage patients to maintain their dental cleaning appointments to avoid future dental issues.

What is Plaque and Tartar?

Essentially, plaque and tartar are results of bacterial and food particle buildup. Plaque is a sticky film that is the main cause of decay and periodontal disease. It later hardens into tartar. Better dental hygiene, such as brushing in between meals and flossing daily, helps to prevent decay and periodontal disease. Some patients may also experience tooth loss as a result of poor dental hygiene. In addition, some patients may need additional cleanings throughout the year depending on their individual needs.

Plaque and Tartar Removal

The dental hygienist will remove plaque and tartar from the teeth and gum line. He or she uses a small mirror and scaler for proper removal. During this time, the hygienist may point out different areas in the mouth that are most affected by the buildup.

Professional Tooth Polishing

Next, the dental hygienist brushes your teeth with a professional toothbrush and gritty toothpaste. The toothbrush is motorized to polish your teeth and the gritty paste taste like regular toothpaste. Now, you may notice slight pressure. Rest assured. Your dental hygienist is simply doing a great job at making your teeth look great!

Rinse and Fluoride Treatment

Finally, you will rinse and possibly receive a fluoride treatment. Not every patient will need fluoride. However, patients that need the treatment will have the varnish applied on their teeth. It hardens quickly and protects the teeth from decay for a few months.

What Your Dental Team Is Doing to Keep You Healthy

Dear Mayani Dental family:

The health and well-being of our patients is our top priority, now and always. In response to the coronavirus pandemic, we are closely following and adhering to precautions advised by the Centers for Disease Control (CDC) and the Massachusetts Department of Public Health.

We want to assure you that we are taking continuous steps to ensure that our office remains a safe place for every patient. It’s important for you to know that dentists are experts in infection control. For instance, we have been trained to prevent the spread of infectious diseases such as flu, HIV, hepatitis, tuberculosis and all viral diseases. The precautions we take every day will also help prevent the spread of the coronavirus.

We follow precautions developed by the CDC to protect both health care personnel and patients. We sterilize all instruments at 375°F after each use and clean each dental operatory after each patient visit, using surface disinfectants that kill all known infectious diseases, including coronavirus. We utilize dedicated hand wash and one-time use disposable materials which help maintain a safe environment for our patients. Our staff is regularly trained in these procedures.

Working with our facility managers, we’ve ensured that our cleaning team has a sufficient stock of supplies. We have asked them to apply additional focus and time on cleaning door handles, faucets, and other items with high-traffic hand touches. Magazines in our waiting areas are also a risk from frequent contact, so they have been removed.

Seeing your dentist is a vital investment for your general health. Our office remains open to care for our patients following the above guidelines. If you have a fever, are exhibiting symptoms of respiratory illness, or have had recent contact with someone who has tested positive for COVID-19, you may be a risk to other patients or staff members. If you are experiencing fever (greater than 100.4), cough, or shortness of breath, please remain at home and contact your primary care physician immediately.
