Boston Gum Grafting: What is Gum Grafting?

Boston Gum Grafting

Boston Gum grafting is a dental microsurgery that treats gum recession. Many Americans suffer from gum recession due to periodontal disease, rough tooth brushing, crooked teeth, genetics, and lip ties. Gum recession is the detachment of the gum from the tooth which exposes the tooth root. Left untreated, tooth and jaw bone loss are likely to occur. Patients that are suffering from gum recession should contact us today to avoid future dental work.

What are the symptoms of gum recession?

Aside from the noticing an exposed tooth root, other symptoms may include:

  • Hot and cold tooth sensitivity
  • Sensitivity or tenderness when brushing
  • Tooth root decay
  • Bleeding gums, especially during tooth brushing and/or flossing

What is the gum grafting procedure?

There are 3 different gum grafting procedures. They include the following.

Free Gingival Graft – This procedure thickens the gum tissue. Essentially, gum tissue is removed from the patient’s palate and applied to the affected area.

Subepithelial Connective Tissue Graft – This method is used to cover the exposed tooth root. It also uses gum tissue from the patient’s palate.

Acellular Dermal Matrix Allograft – This procedure uses donated human tissue for gum grafting. Patients may prefer this method to avoid using their own palate which minimizes overall discomfort.

Once the need for gum grafting has been determined, the teeth are thoroughly cleaned to remove plaque, tartar, and bacteria. The procedure uses a local anesthetic to help keep the patient comfortable and at ease. Whether the tissue is from the palate or donated, an incision is made at the affected area in order to receive the tissue. This incision is usually a bit smaller than the graft itself. This is to accommodate the need for sutures and allow proper healing. Ultimately, healing can take up to 6 weeks but the patient will notice healthier and natural looking gums.

What are the benefits of gum grafting?

Gum grafting uses a microsurgery approach which allows for:

  • Precision
  • Minimal pain and discomfort
  • Faster recovery
  • Aesthetically pleasing results

What Your Dental Team Is Doing to Keep You Healthy

Dear Mayani Dental family:

The health and well-being of our patients is our top priority, now and always. In response to the coronavirus pandemic, we are closely following and adhering to precautions advised by the Centers for Disease Control (CDC) and the Massachusetts Department of Public Health.

We want to assure you that we are taking continuous steps to ensure that our office remains a safe place for every patient. It’s important for you to know that dentists are experts in infection control. For instance, we have been trained to prevent the spread of infectious diseases such as flu, HIV, hepatitis, tuberculosis and all viral diseases. The precautions we take every day will also help prevent the spread of the coronavirus.

We follow precautions developed by the CDC to protect both health care personnel and patients. We sterilize all instruments at 375°F after each use and clean each dental operatory after each patient visit, using surface disinfectants that kill all known infectious diseases, including coronavirus. We utilize dedicated hand wash and one-time use disposable materials which help maintain a safe environment for our patients. Our staff is regularly trained in these procedures.

Working with our facility managers, we’ve ensured that our cleaning team has a sufficient stock of supplies. We have asked them to apply additional focus and time on cleaning door handles, faucets, and other items with high-traffic hand touches. Magazines in our waiting areas are also a risk from frequent contact, so they have been removed.

Seeing your dentist is a vital investment for your general health. Our office remains open to care for our patients following the above guidelines. If you have a fever, are exhibiting symptoms of respiratory illness, or have had recent contact with someone who has tested positive for COVID-19, you may be a risk to other patients or staff members. If you are experiencing fever (greater than 100.4), cough, or shortness of breath, please remain at home and contact your primary care physician immediately.

Remember, the best way to protect yourself and your community is with everyday preventative actions, like washing hands often and disinfecting surfaces regularly. These actions will help minimize and slow the spread of the coronavirus.
